“I don’t think this will turn out to be a complete delusion.”
Mr Ferguson, who sits on the advisory board of a cyrtopcurrency firm Ampleforth, questioned whether digital currencies pegged to a fiat currency – in the way bitcoin is – will create a new form of money.
Instead, he sees these coins as “a bit like an option on digital gold” and argued the fact that it doesn’t correlate closely to traditional asset classes will make it attractive for some investors.
More broadly, Mr Ferguson said the next 10 years of financial history will be much more innovative than the previous decade, which was constrained by a wave of post-GFC regulation.
“This will be a truly revolutionary time,” he said.
