The sequel to Love, Simon is going in a different direction than most of us expected after it’s been announced that Disney+ will produce an entire series as a follow-up to the 2018 movie.
THR are reporting that the production will feature a brand-new cast and a different director, although screenwriters Elizabeth Berger and Isaac Aptaker will remain on board to pen the project.
The movie itself was adapted from Becky Albertelli’s YA novel Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda, which focuses on a closeted teenager called Simon who is outed by another student while beginning an online romance with a mysterious fellow classmate.
The second book centres around Simon’s BFF Leah, and follows “her attempts to deal with various personal issues including friendships and relationships, body image, sexuality, self-esteem, going to college and feeling like an outsider.”
Love, Simon was the first teen-marketed movie production to focus on a gay romance, with the film ultimately grossing $66.3 million worldwide on a budget of $17 million.
The cast included Nick Robinson, Jennifer Garner, Katherine Langford, and Josh Duhamel, with young actors Keiynan Lonsdale, Alexandra Shipp and Jorge Lendeborg Jr playing Simon’s friends.
Disney+ will house all of Disney’s movie and TV content alongside productions from Fox Studios. This will be one of many series penned specifically for the platform, with the service being set to drop on November 12th.
No word yet on casting decisions but we’ll be sure to keep you updated.
