Essex are well placed to press home their advantage with the bat against Kent after a dominant day two with the ball secured a 131-run lead on first innings.
Kent did manage to battle their way past the follow-on mark though thanks to a last-wicket stand of 45 between Matt Milnes and Imran Qayyum. They were still all out for 182.
For those few runs, their innings lasted a staggering 88.2 overs.
“It was a dogged affair and we were never able to get the run-rate up,” said Kent head coach Matt Walker.
“That was partly down to some very good bowling from them, a bit of assistance from the wicket and us losing wickets at crucial times. It was a tough day. We’re still in the game, but we’ll need to bowl well and bat better second time around.
“We had no intention of trying to bat at two an over. I’m not sure really what happened, sometimes you get a way of playing in your head due to what’s happened on the pitch.”
