Theresa May’s deputy has insisted the NHS “is not and will not be up for sale” in a future trade deal with the US.
David Lidington, standing in for the PM while she attended D-Day 75th anniversary commemorations, was pressed by Labour over the issue after Donald Trump said the NHS would be “on the table”, before later U-turning.
He told MPs: “The prime minister has been very clear and she spoke for everyone in the government and on this side of the House – when it comes to trade negotiations, the NHS is not and will not be up for sale.”
Downing Street earlier said that it was “not aware” of any talks between Ms May and Mr Trump that may have changed the president’s mind after his comments at a press office on Tuesday.
